Free Speech

25th May, 2018

Tim,

I write on the 23rd but will post on Friday, the 25th. Here is a DVD I made called Tich Ennis DVD sample, also copy of a letter to John White to whom I sent it last Friday. The DVD is of about 15 minutes playing time and has 5 films made by me on my Apple Mac desktop computer using the supplied program, Photo Booth. I was unaware of this program until recently and now film myself speaking my pieces and put them on my blog, YouTube and Facebook.

See my letter to John White for more information.

Please let me know what you think of these movies. I consult you as to content, John as to technical aspects and Peter Somers aesthetically.

I now have several movies on the above platforms, and more waiting.   I have 100 followers of my blog, as a friend of mine said, people with nothing better to do!

I don’t know how many letters I have sent you in my lifetime, they could probably be counted on the fingers of one hand. You once said you love my letters.

I know you are in pain and often in hospital. Once exasperatedly I said to you you don’t even tell me if you read my letters or listen to or look at anything I send you. Then, you said you are in hospital, which you were. But not always.   When you are well enough please do so.   I need to know whether you want more from me. I too am human. I am not ignoring you.

Many a rose is born to blush unseen and waste its sweetness on the desert air. No rose without a thorn. You did respond, when prodded, when I asked about my singing CD, and excellently. Thank you. By text or voice is satisfactory, text preferred because more permanent.

Why do artists create? Fame is the spur, said someone, possibly a character in Shakespeare. Neither money nor fame are my spur. I create for love. Because I love it.   Some have said they like my stuff. Or some of it. My best friend is dead, I think he liked all of it. He has gone to that bourne from which no traveller returns.

Empathy on all sides is required. Who is sorriest for themself here, you or I? Possibly you, with some justification. How do I know if you want more from me if you don’t respond? I don’t want to give unwanted gifts. One Porsche for sale, unwanted gift. I did not so advertise.   Or Ferrari, as the case may be.

If I sound a bit bloody minded here it is because I am bleeding. Metaphorically speaking.   We may be engaged in a dialogue of the deaf.

Say it ain’t so,

David (Tich) Ennis

Discrimination

I like films and books and music when they’re good.

Don’t ask me if I like them, is that understood?

I like good.

When you ask do I like them do you mean some or none or all?

I like a well built wall.

It depends how its done, not what.

That’s your lot.

Mary,

Here is my CD, mostly new (old) songs, mastered by Beardfire in Dublin to make the sound better.   I hope you like it.

Rohan Healy of Beardfire spoke highly of it, the great old songs sung as if singing in the kitchen, he said.

Mastering makes a lot of difference to a record, I said to George it sounds like a Johnny Cash record as far as sound quality goes, I like it anyway.   Let me know what you think.

I have a new book out, Reasonable Rhymes, for sale in Beat That and Pat the Barber’s here in Arklow. No takers so far. You said people aren’t in to reading books. My brother said music sells better, you don’t have to be able to read. Some guy my brother spoke to said he falls asleep when he gets to the second page of a book.

Do you think I should try to sell my singing CD? You said there’s no harm in trying.   Beat That have one copy for sale, an earlier version, not mastered, like the one you have already.   James there said no one buys stuff made by someone not famous.   He sells second-hand books and vinyl records and cd’s of all kinds, all well chosen.

George said he should put an ad up in the library in the children’s section because he has good books for children. He said he doesn’t want any children coming into his shop, if they came in he would box their ears, he has enough trauma with the adults. So don’t look young if you go in there.

Send a tenner to me, Tich Ennis, Reality, Seaview Avenue, Arklow, its all grist to the mill. I am a late starter but better late than never.

James sells good stuff, by the way. An American spoke highly of his shop so he is internationally known. At least with passers by.

So get an earful of my CD, what do you think of the words, the songs, the tunes and least of all my voice? As Joe Tobin said, at least you can hear the words.   I am not going to die of over praise.

So you are going to a wedding today.   Another good man bites the dust. That’s life.

Best wishes and happy listening,

David Ennis

Fan Letter

Upheavals everywhere.

Its in the air.

The authorities clamp down.

Freedom is out of town.

Even Fats Domino is down.

If I see eighty-nine will I be free?

And others along with me.

We’ll see.

Blue Monday, Blueberry Hill, I remember them still.

Happiness is not dead, it never goes away.

Its here to stay.

Why look the other way?

We have our music, all the same.

Fats Domino, I’m glad you came.

Commemoration

Am I the greatest thing since scrambled eggs or sliced bread?

Will I be commemorated when I’m dead?

Get your act together, I live in stormy weather.

Should I be awarded the Nobel prize posthumously it will make no difference to me.

I never won a beauty competition, I went fishin’.

The prizes I won in life would fit in a matchbox.

In the Victorian era people gave their lovers locks.

Of their hair, I mean.

I used Brylcream.

I remember Elvis Presley and James Dean.

Blame

You can’t blame others for how you are, that’s for sure.

All things are pure to the pure.

How do I fit into this jigsaw puzzle?

Does your dog require a muzzle?

I had a dog and cat once upon a time and more than one or two.

I played with mine, do you?

Now I more or less live alone.

Me, my radio, my computer and my phone.

I write and write and write, alright.

I write day and night.

I have not got much appetite.

I like food when it has good taste.

I hope the Earth will not be laid to waste.

And that my writing is to your taste.
