New CD

Mary,

Here is my CD, mostly new (old) songs, mastered by Beardfire in Dublin to make the sound better.   I hope you like it.

Rohan Healy of Beardfire spoke highly of it, the great old songs sung as if singing in the kitchen, he said.

Mastering makes a lot of difference to a record, I said to George it sounds like a Johnny Cash record as far as sound quality goes, I like it anyway.   Let me know what you think.

I have a new book out, Reasonable Rhymes, for sale in Beat That and Pat the Barber’s here in Arklow. No takers so far. You said people aren’t in to reading books. My brother said music sells better, you don’t have to be able to read. Some guy my brother spoke to said he falls asleep when he gets to the second page of a book.

Do you think I should try to sell my singing CD? You said there’s no harm in trying.   Beat That have one copy for sale, an earlier version, not mastered, like the one you have already.   James there said no one buys stuff made by someone not famous.   He sells second-hand books and vinyl records and cd’s of all kinds, all well chosen.

George said he should put an ad up in the library in the children’s section because he has good books for children. He said he doesn’t want any children coming into his shop, if they came in he would box their ears, he has enough trauma with the adults. So don’t look young if you go in there.

Send a tenner to me, Tich Ennis, Reality, Seaview Avenue, Arklow, its all grist to the mill. I am a late starter but better late than never.

James sells good stuff, by the way. An American spoke highly of his shop so he is internationally known. At least with passers by.

So get an earful of my CD, what do you think of the words, the songs, the tunes and least of all my voice? As Joe Tobin said, at least you can hear the words.   I am not going to die of over praise.

So you are going to a wedding today.   Another good man bites the dust. That’s life.

Best wishes and happy listening,

David Ennis

Fan Letter

Upheavals everywhere.

Its in the air.

The authorities clamp down.

Freedom is out of town.

Even Fats Domino is down.

If I see eighty-nine will I be free?

And others along with me.

We’ll see.

Blue Monday, Blueberry Hill, I remember them still.

Happiness is not dead, it never goes away.

Its here to stay.

Why look the other way?

We have our music, all the same.

Fats Domino, I’m glad you came.

Commemoration

Am I the greatest thing since scrambled eggs or sliced bread?

Will I be commemorated when I’m dead?

Get your act together, I live in stormy weather.

Should I be awarded the Nobel prize posthumously it will make no difference to me.

I never won a beauty competition, I went fishin’.

The prizes I won in life would fit in a matchbox.

In the Victorian era people gave their lovers locks.

Of their hair, I mean.

I used Brylcream.

I remember Elvis Presley and James Dean.

Blame

You can’t blame others for how you are, that’s for sure.

All things are pure to the pure.

How do I fit into this jigsaw puzzle?

Does your dog require a muzzle?

I had a dog and cat once upon a time and more than one or two.

I played with mine, do you?

Now I more or less live alone.

Me, my radio, my computer and my phone.

I write and write and write, alright.

I write day and night.

I have not got much appetite.

I like food when it has good taste.

I hope the Earth will not be laid to waste.

And that my writing is to your taste.

Full Stop

My best friend Michael O’Brien agrees I should stop giving my stuff away for nothing on my blog. I have written various things and not put them there recently, too busy.

I have only 75 or 76 followers on my blog. My nephew said people liking and following other people’s blogs often only want a like or a following in return. I don’t want those likes and followers. I know at least one is genuine, the only one I wrote to and who replied. Thank you.

My plan is to have a book printed and sell it locally, quite a few people, maybe 43, have said they will buy. I will sell it for almost nothing, the printer will make more than me.

I ordered a book on self-publishing from Amazon today, by Rick Smith, which seems the best on the subject. So my work may be available as a print on demand book (POD) and also electronically when I can get my head around how to set up writing for those and uploading and all that.

That way is known as going over the heads of the gatekeepers, who are very good at slamming doors in people’s faces and ignoring them. Going direct to the public.

25 per cent of the top selling books on Amazon are self published, usually half POD and half digitally. Digital books have a 65 per cent market share, and growing.   People buying digital books buy more books, presumably because they are cheaper than on paper, as well as instantly delivered and other advantages.  Being old and traditional I prefer paper books and do not own an electronic book reader. Also being broke.

The paper method costs more, including to me to get my book printed locally for which I will have to borrow.   Selling as a self publisher through Amazon involves a steep learning curve, hopefully I get to the top of that hill!   But no cost to the writer, except time and know how.   The know how I do not have but hope to learn.

Of course not every book sells, I am well aware of that. Today I heard I failed to win a short story competition. A friend of mine said, when you’re starting you have to do everything for yourself.

Contrary to my title here, this may not be my last word ever on my blog. Look forward to Full Start.

I’m a crazy mixed up old man, not a crazy mixed up kid.
