Explain

Explain the world to me or must I explain?

Gaining understanding gives me pain.

The answer is in the question.

Teachers bridle at that suggestion.

Ask the perfect question, perfectly framed.

Simplicity is for what the great are famed.

Ask, but who to ask, yourself, that is your task.

Seek and you shall find said someone, never mind.

Untie the ties that bind.

You have a mouth and ears and eyes.

Use them to make a body wise.

The ties of ignorance are chains, cut loose.

Remove your gag and blindfold, what’s the use?

I speak to those with ears to hear.

The undiscovered country is right here.

Meanwhile I drink beer.

So it is down to me to explain.

Oh life, oh pain.

When you know the pain will disappear.

There is not far from here.

How may I make it clear?

I shed a tear.

What’s another year in jail, in Hell?

A year too much, free me from this cell.

So I explain, the key is you.

You know what to do.

I do too.

Explain.

An end to pain.

Explain.

Explain.

Explain.

The Arts Council

Is it true the Arts Council are creeps and they only support pretentious stuff?

I’ve had enough.

I’m no insect, I don’t crawl.

I’ve heard shite, I’ve seen it all.

It cuts no ice with me at all.

Am I completely, absolutely, totally wrong, do they ever get it right if only by mistake?

Should I take a chance, are they completely fake?

Will there be any mourners at their wake?

When people don’t understand something they say its art.

A bloody fart.

Not in my face, drop dead.

Enough said.

Music Maker

Should I tell the truth as it applies to me or is that boring wait and see.

If you sing and record at home your song needs mastering, or maybe poem.

Here is a boring fact, ISRC code, what’s that?

You need one on each track for identification on a radio station.

They are free if you look around and do no harm to the sound.

Whoever duplicates your CD if you make one puts them on at no extra cost.

No one told me all this, not all is lost.

I found out by asking, looking around and a little luck.

There are good guys out there who read the book.

When you’re starting you have to do everything for yourself including finding who to use for what.

Quite a lot.

If someone lived my life before could they tell me more?

Little by little I find how, your way would be different, a different hand on the plough.

I still have more to find out will I get there?

Yes, if I care.

So there.

What’s good is rare.

And who, you?

Maybe me too.

It is a case of doing things one step at a time.

As I wrote this rhyme.

This has been a blog, online diary, my recent history.

Why anyone else would be interested is a mystery.

I said nothing about how many cups of coffee I had nor a photo of my coffee cup.

Now at last I shut up.

Fan Letter

Upheavals everywhere.

Its in the air.

The authorities clamp down.

Freedom is out of town.

Even Fats Domino is down.

If I see eighty-nine will I be free?

And others along with me.

We’ll see.

Blue Monday, Blueberry Hill, I remember them still.

Happiness is not dead, it never goes away.

Its here to stay.

Why look the other way?

We have our music, all the same.

Fats Domino, I’m glad you came.

My Music Career

to Kevin, ken
Hi,

I am seriously considering using a digital music distributor, EmuBands, to distribute a cd I made, mastered by BeardFire in Dublin, me singing old Irish songs. EmuBands have a lot going for them compared to others in their field, including excellent customer relations.
Prior to mastering I sold or gave away ten or more of this cd, called Great Irish Songs, to a demographic varied in age, gender and nationality, locally, getting a favourable or very favourable response.
Here is what Rohan at BeardFire said:

All in all I think it’s sound really good, the performances are lovely, great song selection. Has the feeling of sitting around the kitchen singing the great old songs, very nice.

As a rather old fashioned person I (David) like physical cd’s but download sales are much easier and cheaper all round, for me and the public.
Apparently older, whatever that is, people do download music, not all being technophobes.
EmuBands seem to distribute to all download sites, including new ones appearing from time to time, at no extra cost to the artist.
Its a case, I suppose, of run up the flag and see if anyone salutes.
All songs on my cd (or download) are out of copyright. I can send it to you both by we-transfer so you could see what I’m talking about.
I know zero about publicity.
I suppose I will go ahead anyway irrespective of naysayers. I am aware of ISRC’s and UPC’s and Shazam, all included in EmuBand’s single price, but usually extra charges from other digital distributors.
Ignore this email if busy or so inclined, but, as people, say there’s no harm in trying.
I have not given up writing so I have more than one string to my bow. As Fritz Kreisler may or may not have said.
I won’t know if its worth doing unless I do it.
If you know the future, tell me.

Carlo Rovelli and Chuck Berry

5th July, 2017

John,

Strange bedfellows. Here are audio recordings from BBC radio stations of recent date, Desert Island Discs, Carlo Rovelli, and what I call the Chuck Berry Story, interviews from 1975 and 1976 with great music, not all by the man himself.

Chuck Berry died in March at the age of ninety. Rock ‘n’ Roll keeps you young. But its not the only thing, said a passerby to me today. Chuck made a cd recently, which I may get around to buying, I heard a track or two on the radio and they were good. There was life in the old dog yet, at least until March.

Rovelli has not died so far, his choice of eight records to take to a desert island was quite good, although no Chuck Berry. Not much good without a record player, even of the wind-up kind. I assume that is also provided, along with the works of Shakepeare and the bible.

I will post this on Friday and am writing on the preceding Wednesday. Who knows what may happen in the interim? Not Theresa May. David Cameron also proved a failure as a fortune teller, and look what happened to him. No one is right all the time.

Rovelli, as you know, says time, space and matter are mythical, or words to that effect. Is only Rock ‘n’ Roll real? Or jazz in your case. A Chuck Berry record, Johnny B. Goode, was sent into outer space on a 78 r.p.m. disc. This assumes aliens, far from being an advanced form of civilisation, are living in the past, the fifties or earlier, the wind up gramophone era, possibly pre electricity.

Is there intelligent life in outer space is a question often asked. Why should there be? Is there intelligent life on Earth replied a smart alec, not Rovelli. Are some people too intelligent for their own good? That could be the case.

A brain surgeon in the U.S. operated on his own brain, successfully. We can’t all be like him, nor would we want to be. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, a saying in America, home of junk food and a lot else besides. Jazz music is the only art form originating in the U.S., a person told me, a musician. What about pop art?

A rock musician plays three chords to three thousand people, a jazz musician plays three thousand chords to three people. And I quote.   Hopefully not ad nauseam.

This letter comprises the wrapping, the advertisement for the real thing, on discs herewith, to use legal terminology. I enclose herewith, say lawyers. How can it not be herewith if it is enclosed?   Tautology: using unnecessary words. Enough words, d

Fake Beatles

Oh my God free me from the fake, how much can I take?

And then in huge letters a sign, The Rolling Stones, (tribute band), gimme sunshine, not shade.

Its for the real thing I was made.

I saw a poster and every name on it was famous, some dead.

Have they come back to haunt us, listen to a record instead.

While I’m at it, please for God’s sake sing in your own voice.

I’ve had it up to here with imitations, genuine is my choice.
