Up And Down

Things are looking up and down again, some things aren’t half bad.

Some things are only slightly mad.

Not quite as bad as I thought whoever or from whomever I bought.

Life is quite fraught.

Not quite as bad as I thought.

But still not quite completely all there.

When I trust them I go spare.

So the misleading mislead the misled.

I sometimes think I should have stayed in bed.

Truth Tellers

Truth tellers are not welcome it seems to me.

Oh well, the best is yet to be.

Can I have a good cup of tea?

Look all around you, see the worst.

So much with lies and falsehood cursed.

Hear everyday ordinary political speech.

Is the truth beyond their reach?

Or ours.

Grow flowers.

I write by the way of a bouquet.

This is what I have to say.

People say what suits them not what they think about a lot of things.

This is true of many kings.

Note I do not say all.

Extremism could kill us all.

That’s all.

God Again

God is dejected and rejected.

God is the way things are, the way we are.

He sure as Hell is not our guiding star.

I may not put this on my blog.

If you mention the word God they think you mean a backward dog.

Advanced Years

Just when I get too old good art exhibitions come here.

Caravaggio and Vermeer.

The world is becoming a smaller place.

It knows its place in outer space.

So, what should I do?

I have a free bus ticket too.

I suppose I should go.

The real thing is what I want to know.

Money is dead and gone.

I live on.

Maybe not too old.

I want real gold.

Should I, as a book selling barrow boy shouted, get culture before the cataclysm?

Or maybe that was the catechism.

Daggers Drawn

Why are we at daggers drawn until dawn?

Who fights a duel except a fool?

Death rather than dishonour, yes, he said, as for me I’d rather stay in bed.

He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.

So they say.

Why fight all night, why be uptight?

Alright.

I am seventy-six and survived some dirty tricks.

Its as clear as mud to me its better if we agree.

Now and then, as Elvis sang, there’s a fool such as me.

People just like me died young, alone, unhonoured and unsung.

I don’t wish to die for a flag or any other rag.

That’s not my bag.

Nor do I wish to die alone in a tangled mess of blood and bone.

Why can’t we leave each other alone?

Talk, at least on the telephone.

Friendliness is not unknown.

Blood or an ice cream cone?

I know which choice is mine.

I hope the weather keeps fine.

Optimists

Optimists in Ireland buy an open topped car.

Rain is not far away, not very far.

Sun hats are rarely seen, rare as blue sky.

Nor sunglasses, don’t ask why.

Sun lotion is not a big seller.

If you don’t know why ask Joseph Heller.

He may never have been in Ireland, I don’t know.

Today the sun shines and the wind doth blow.

Okay, a breeze.

Leaves rustle in the trees.

Swallows fly in times like these.

I need to recharge my phone.

I rang a friend, I’m not alone.

I look upward, I see a kite, the feathered kind.

And blue sky, oh never mind.

This is one of the few days you can wear Summer clothes.

A day to remember, one of those.

Your Point Of View

Why can’t you agree with me?

Is that the problem, you see?

From your point of view do you say the same thing too?

Communes fall apart, they always do.

Who’s turn to wash the dishes or sweep the floor?

I’ve had enough, I’m going out the door.

I can’t stand it any more.

Idealism appears unrealistic, it doesn’t work.

Unfortunately many want to shirk.

It does work when each one is a saint.

Are you? I ain’t.

People putting themselves first is the name of the game.

To their eternal shame.

Its human nature, for better or worse.

Some pray, some curse.
